Thiruvananthapuram: If you order banana chips online on Amazon, you are getting it courtesy Christy Treesa George.
Not just banana chips, Amazon customers get most of their typical Kerala products such as pepper, bamboo rice, honey, cardamom etc from Christy.
Christy’s business model is simple. She buys goods and products from small-scale producers from across the state, packs them in Amazon cartons and sends them to customers. And, today, the revenue stands at Rs 10 lakh a month.
Once she started selling online via Amazon, she became so good at it that she became the online retail giant’s best seller in Kerala.
The beginning wasn’t that smooth for Christy. She was a fashion designer at Hantex. In 2013, she quit her job to start Looms and Weaves but couldn’t find sales traction due to people’s aversion towards handloom products.
When Amazon set up shop in India, Christy was chosen among the first lot of 10,000 sellers.
There was no looking back. Initially she focused on handloom products from Balaramapuram and Kannur. Then she branched out to bed sheets, banana chips, Ayurveda products, jute bags and several other products.
Today, on average she gets 200 orders a day. Each order is packed in the packaging materials handed over by Amazon, sealed and sent directly to customers. Most of her customers are from North India.
Customers return with repeat orders once they come to know about the quality and taste of genuine products. A bigger platform is awaiting Christy as she will soon start selling on the global Amazon site.
Christy has an advice for to-be entrepreneurs. Even cow dung is being sold online these days. So, those struggling to find market for their products should try out online too.
